Die Maschine gehörte Anfang 1940 als "Doppelwinkel" zum Stab der II./JG 26. Dort wurde sie von Htm. Herwig Knüppel und später von Htm. Karl Ebbinghausen geflogen. Sie kam dann später als "weisse 4" zur 4./JG 26, welche in Marquise-Est lag. Vermutlich bei dem Einheitswechsel wurde die Maschine auf den Stand einer Bf 109 E-4/N gebracht, wovon der DB 601 N zeugt.
Am 30. September 1940 machte der Flugzeugführer Uffz. Horst Perez mit der Maschine nach einem Luftkampf über Beachy Head eine Bauchlandung in East Dean.

Zunächst wurde die Maschine in Farnborough untersucht und dann ging sie auf Reisen. Sie wurde als Ausstellungsstück in den USA und Kanada zum Sammeln von Kriegsspenden verwendet.

Irgendwann landete sie auf einem Schrottplatz. Dort wurde sie im Jahre 1960 von dem Engländer Peter Foote geborgen und nach England gebracht. Allerdings ohne Leitwerk und Motor, diese Teile sind über die Jahre verloren gegangen. Fast 30 Jahre lang, lag die Emil nun in einem Schuppen auf dem Flugplatz von Bournemouth.

Das Imperial War Museum Duxford kaufte Anfang 1998 die Maschine und ließ sie restaurieren. Dabei wurde die rechte Tragflächenoberseite der Maschine nicht mit einem neuen Anstrich versehen. Darauf befindet sich die schon ziemlich abgenutzte Originalfarbe.
