Umbau aus der Bf 109 G-5.
Erstflug am 18.05.1943 durch Fritz Wendel[Q-37] in Stuttgart-Echterdingen.
Flugerprobung im Juni 1943 mit einem 30-Stunden Flugprogramm im DB-Testzentrum in Stuttgart-Echterdingen. Neben der Startleistung von 1490 PS leistete der DB 628 in 2000m Höhe 1580 PS, in 6400m Höhe 1480 PS, in 9600m 1350 PS und 1130 PS in 12000m Höhe.
Die Spannweite wurde von 11,92m um weitere 0,25m erhöht. Die Luftschraube erhöhte sich im Durchmesser um 0,65m, das Rüstgewicht um ca. 175kg, ferner kam ein zweistufiger Turbolader hinzu.
