Der Fhj.-Uffz. René Darbois (von der 1./JG 4) ist am 25.07.1944 mit dieser Bf 109 G-6 "gelbe 4" von der 3./JG 4 bei einem Überführungsflug mit 16 Maschinen der 1. und 3. Staffel, der von Maniago (Italien) aus startete, zu den Alliieren nach Santa Maria (Italien) desertiert.

Bei den Alliierten wurde die Maschine auf dem Freeman Field, USA 1945/46 gründlich erprobt und bekam erst die Beute-Kennung "FE-496" und später "T2-496". Dabei wurde der originale Anstrich komplett entfernt.

Viele Jahre später, als die Maschine restauriert werden sollte, war die wahre Identität nicht mehr bekannt. So wurde sie in den Farben der Bf 109 G-6 "weisse 2" der 7./JG 27 und der Werk-Nr. 160163 bemalt und ausgestellt. Erst im Jahre 1988 ist die richtige Identität wieder ans Tageslicht gekommen.

Im August 2023 tauchte auf Facebook ein Foto auf, wo die Maschine im entlackten Zustand im Restaurationbereich des National Air and Space Museum zu sehen ist.
